Owner, Installer - Doug Farmer
Born and raised in Austin, TX where I earned the rank of Eagle Scout and graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Marketing. Now I live in Houston with my wife and 3 kids.
During the 2008 Crash I was living in San Francisco. As people moved out of the city I would pick up their old furniture off the street, refinish it or reupholster it, and flip it as a side hustle.
In 2017 I started my own business, Sovereign Carpentry. I specialized in very old reclaimed wood, turning it into heirloom quality furniture for clients as well as installing barn beam mantles, barn siding walls, and custom sliding barn doors.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What's the process?
Let's chat! We can email back and forth or schedule a time to meet at Old World Lumber where I source my materials to go over options and designs. Then I'll email you over a PayPal invoice for the deposit (50%). The remainder will be due once the door is installed.

Q: What's your Lead Time?
Typically 6-10 weeks

Q: Do I need to add blocking/framing to the doorway?
In most instances, no, you won't need to add blocking above the door. I will drill out the steel sliding rail so the holes match existing studs. Typically, if the doorway is in a load-bearing wall, it will have a large wooden header above the door anyway. If the doorway is not in a load-bearing wall, it will have a small wooden header above it and this is where most barn door installers run into trouble because they have to add a strip of wood above the door to hold the sliding door rail, By drilling out the holes in the metal sliding rail on site, I can perfectly line up and drill into the studs above the door, providing excellent support.

Q: Do you fill in the existing hinge holes?
Yes, I can fill in and hide the existing holes! If that's something you'll be needing let's chat about it and I'll include that as part of the quote.

Q: What do you make that would match the barn door?
All kinds of things! Using the same wood I've made custom dining tables, shelves, mantels, vanities, and buffets. If you're wanting to coordinate with a barn door, let me know and I'd be happy to send you some designs to look over.
